Installing Simply Accounting Program on Windows Vista Help and Support

I was trying to install Simply Accounting Premium 2009 by Sage Software onto Windows Vista last week and couldn't get it to install properly. At the beginning of the setup process, it told me that Windows Vista or an anti-virus program was wanting to upgrade and that I should restart my computer.

It was basically having firewall problems and the firewall was not letting me install certain files.

I tried restarting it several times and it didn't work. I also updated Windows Vista, which took a few hours, and it still didn't work. Exasperated, I decided I'd downgrade to Windows XP. That's a long story that I won't share, but suffice it to say, Acer computers won't let you downgrade. I tried going online to find some Windows Vista help or Windows Vista support.

Anyways, what was the final solution? I just turned off my McAffee Antivirus program, which immediately solves the firewall problem, ran the installation of Simply Accounting Premium 2009 onto Windows Vista, then turned the McAffee program back on. It worked!!

I couldn't find anyone with the solution on the internet, so I thought I'd post it in case it could help someone out.

10 things you can do to increase performance in Vista

Windows Vista has some great new security and functionality features, as well as cool eye candy, such as Aero transparency, Flip 3D, and other graphical tricks. But all this comes with overhead that may lead to a performance hit on anything less than a top-of-the-line supercomputer.

If you find Vista’s performance lagging, the good news is that you can make it run faster. Here are some of the steps you can take.

1: Add more RAM

There’s no denying it: Vista is a RAM-hungry operating system. Whereas Windows XP usually runs great on 512MB, you really need a minimum of a gigabyte to run Vista acceptably. Two gigs is even better, and if you turn on all the graphical features and keep a lot of programs open, especially those that use a lot of memory, four gigs isn’t overkill.

Luckily, RAM is still relatively inexpensive — but it’s rumored to be on the rise, so get as much of it as you can, while you can. You won’t regret it.

2: Use ReadyBoost

Can’t add physical RAM? Maybe you have a laptop that already has the maximum amount of memory installed. In that case, Vista provides you with a way to fool your computer into thinking it has more RAM than it does. You can use a flash memory card or USB key to boost the system memory; Vista can access the flash memory more quickly than data stored on the hard disk.

It’s best to use a high performance flash card or USB drive for ReadyBoost. When you insert it, Windows will ask if you want to use it to speed up system performance, and then you can allocate how much of the card’s/drive’s memory you want to use for that purpose. 3: Get a good video card

If you have enough RAM, the most likely hardware culprit on a slow-moving Windows Vista machine is the video card. You need a fairly high end card to run Aero at all, but some computer vendors are selling computers with graphics cards that run it badly. You can find out whether your video card is the bottleneck by checking your Windows Experience Index (WEI) score from the Performance Information and Tools applet in Control Panel.

The onboard video adapters in most systems aren’t powerful enough to run Vista properly. If you want to run Aero and be happy doing it, get a card that’s Vista Premium Certified. As with system RAM, the more video RAM the better, and if you want to play Vista games, be sure your card supports Direct X 10.

4: Eliminate extra startup programs

You may find that you have a lot of programs loading automatically when you boot Windows, especially if you bought your Vista system from a hardware vendor who added lots of software. Some of these you may want, such as antivirus or anti-spyware programs, but many of them you probably don’t even use or use only occasionally and don’t want to run all the time. Yet they’re all loading into memory and consuming your system resources — and thus slowing down your computer as they run in the background.

Some programs can be prevented from starting automatically by removing them from the Startup folder. Others are configured in the registry to run at startup. Many can be managed through the Windows Defender Software Explorer, which you can access from the Manage Startup Programs link in the left pane of the Performance Information And Tools applet.

Or you can disable all of the visual effects by clicking the Adjust For Best Performance option.

6: Adjust indexing options

Vista has a much-improved search function, but it’s dependent on indexing the files and programs on your hard disk so they can be found quickly. When the indexing process is running, however, it can slightly slow down other programs you’re trying to run at the same time.

You can select the locations you want to index; fewer locations will result in less indexing and thus better overall performance. On the other hand, you’ll get better search performance by indexing all locations. You can’t turn the indexing feature off completely, but you can adjust locations indexed by selecting Adjust Indexing Options in the left pane of the Performance Information And Tools applet.

7: Clean up and defrag the disk

Fragmented files or a lot of unneeded extra files on the disk can slow down performance. Vista provides a disk cleanup tool, which you can access from Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools. Specify a drive you want to clean up, and the tool will estimate the amount of space you can recover by running the cleanup process.

Defragmenting the disk rearranges data on it so that all the parts of a file are together; this allows Vista to access those files more quickly. The built-in disk defragmenter is also accessed from the System Tools menu. The defragmentation process itself can slow down your computer, so you may want to schedule it to run at a time when you aren’t using the computer. Third-party defrag utilities are also available.

8: Adjust your power settings

If you don’t mind using more power, you can boost performance by setting your power settings to the High Performance option. Click the Power Options applet in Control Panel and select that choice. By default, this configuration is set to Balanced, which limits the CPU to 50% power during normal operation.

9: Turn off the sidebar

The sidebar is a cool feature of Vista, but if you don’t use its applets, you can save some resources by disabling it. First, right-click it and select Properties. Next, deselect the check box to start the sidebar when Windows starts. Then, close the sidebar by right-clicking it and selecting Close.

10: If all else fails, turn off Aero

This is a last-resort option for most Vista users; after all, Aero is what makes Vista look like Vista. You go to Start > All Programs and launch your favorite game. The splash screen shows, then the screen goes black just like always has whenever you have played it before. But this time, without any warning or explanation the game quits and you are staring at your desktop again.

Don't bother reading the hundreds of forum threads listed in the search results after this one for whatever query you typed. The solution that is guaranteed to work is given in this page.

I have wasted dozens of hours trying almost everything that was suggested in the threads that come in the search results but none of them worked.

I had this problem with Battlefield 2. I created this page so that you won't have to waste time on looking for a solution for days on the end. I posted it here because pages on this site rank high on the search results so you can find it.

Update (june 8 2009): The crash to desktop problem in Battlefield 2 can be solved by editing the video.con file in [My Documents]/Battlefield 2/Profiles/Default/video.con or lowering the refresh rate of your monitor.

1. First find out the refresh rate of your monitor. Do this by right clicking on desktop and clicking on Properties > Display Settings > Advanced Settings > Monitor. See the current refresh rate. If it is more than 60 Hertz try to reduce it to 60. If there is no other option as is typical of Dell Laptops (like mine), you must edit the video.con file. Instructions below:

Open this file in a text editor: [My Documents]/Battlefield 2/Profiles/Default/video.con

If your refresh rate is 63 Herz, Change this line:

VideoSettings.setResolution 800x600@60Hz

Into this:

VideoSettings.setResolution 800x600@63Hz

Now your computer should be able to run battlefield. There might be similar settings for other EA/ Non-EA games. Reduce the refresh rate of your monitor or increase the refresh rate of your game. That's it!

Why Does This Happen?

Update: This problem is most likely becaue of a screen refresh rate incompatibility between your monitor and the game. Read the passage above.

This is a problem with, among many other things - Directx 10 in Vista. DirectX 10 is not supported by many games such as Battlefield 2, Far Cry 2 and Caesar 4. Changing the compatibility mode to Windows XP SP2, Running the game'e exe as an Administrator, changing resolution, using external monitor with a different refresh rate are some of the solutions that have been suggested over and over again in forums but I have found that none of them worked for me (you may try them, they may work for you). Please Note: It is not possible to install Directx 9c in Windows Vista.

The only way to get this to work is by Installing Windows XP parallel to Windows Vista (using Dual Boot) and then installing the necessary display and input device drivers and then install your game in that OS.

Don't bother wasting time by

1. Looking for updates for your driver

2. Posting in forums looking for the answer

3. Trying to install DirectX 9.

4. Installing a Virtual Machine in your computer and then installing the game inside that machine and then trying to run it (the most ridiculous idea).

Solution: Just install Windows XP and dual boot it and run your game in it. It is the only known solution to the problem.

Depends really on what you define as 'better'. XP has been well patched, and runs stabily on most currently operational hardware. Vista requires more modern hardware, and (as with XP) the more the merrier. Don't be frugal on RAM or processor power, though the 64-bit and 32-bit arguments will go on for several years still.

System requirements and licensing aside, Vista is the next generation Microsoft platform for desktops, and it has a few 'neat' gadgets, but nothing overwhelmingly worth the price of the upgrade.If your computer sits under the desk and does it's thing day in and day out, stick with XP.

For laptops however, it's an entirely different story. A laptop designed to work with Vista, (signed drivers, etc) will gain from one critical feature in Vista, the ability to seamlessly switch from network to network (though this feature is available only in the Ultimate version) with few if any hitches.However, if you have one or two networks you work off of (home and work for instance) honestl? It's a bit of a pricy upgrade for seamless network switching, I'd say stick with XP. If you are a true mobile user (airports, hotels, home, and twelve work locations) you might want to consider Vista.

Similar to the Windows 2000 -> Windows XP migration, the XP -> Vista migration will come in stages. The early adopters are there now finding issues and reporting back their problems to Microsoft. Patches are released and really unless you are quite saavy with technology and want that bleeding edge, wait for Service Pack 1 which should correct the majority of the common day-to-day issues. After SP1, there will be another rash of people who upgrade, and around SP2 most of the corporate world will begin their eventual migration as well.

In a couple years XP will be relelgated to the same place as Windows 98, and 2000. The mainstream people will look at you funny and tell you that the driver for the new card they want is Vista only, or the game requires Windows Vista. It's called progress, and it's inevitable. For those who think it's the year of the Penguin? Linux will reach desktops the day that games are written on Linux and ported to Windows and not one day sooner. Why? Because games drive the technology of computers (well that and porn, but that's a given).

This despite the fact that Windows Vista has been available for purchase for more than three years now. Taking into consideration the growth rate of the latest Windows client, Vista’s days as the no.2 operating system worldwide are numbered. In fact, my prediction is that by the end of July 2010, Windows 7 will have more users than Vista, and will be runner up to the nearly-decade old Windows XP.

Internet metrics company Net Applications notes that Windows 7 has jumped all the way to 13.70% of the operating system market worldwide in June 2010, from 12.68% in May. In the same period of time, Windows Vista’s share was eroded to just 14.68% from 15.25%, with the platform now sliding lower and lower each month.

Just by looking at the figures provided by Net Applications, and it’s clear that July 2010 will be the month worth marking in your calendars. The Redmond company’s latest Windows release has been growing constantly since launch, jumping by at least 1% from one month to another. If this trend continues, Windows 7 is bound to have at least 14.70% at the end of July.

1. Power button default action

The default action for the Power button on the start menu in Windows Vista is Sleep, which isn’t necessarily useful for everybody. You can configure this setting easily by using the advanced power settings panel, which is a little tricky to get to normally, but we’ll take the shortcut. Open a command prompt (type cmd into the start menu search bar), and then type in the following: powercfg.cpl,1. You could also take the long route (Control Panel Power Options Change Plan Settings Change Advanced Power Settings) Once you get to this dialog, browse down as shown to “Power buttons and lid”

Power button action – Changes the hardware power button action
Start menu power button – Changes the power button on the Start Menu

You can change the power button to either Sleep, Hibernate or Shut Down, or even nothing for the hardware power button.

2. Hide Desktop Icon Text on Windows Vista

Some icons are just obvious enough that nobody should need text below them to tell them what the icon is for. A good example of this is the icon for Internet Explorer. We’re all really used to it by now, and the text just makes it ugly. Just right-click on the shortcut, and choose Rename. Now hold down the Alt key and type in 255 on the keypad to the right of the keyboard. You can’t use the number keys right above the keyboard, they won’t work. If you have a laptop, you can turn on numlock and then use the little number keys next to the regular letters. (You know you always wondered what they were for)

For the first shortcut on the desktop, a simple Alt+255 will do. For the next shortcut, you’ll have to enter the combination twice (Alt+255, Alt+255). For the third, 3 times… you get the idea. The way this works is that the Alt+255 character is blank, so the shortcut filename is actually just named with a character that is completely blank. Since you can’t have two shortcuts or files named the exact same thing, the second shortcut will have to be named with two blank characters.

Now we have a sweet looking icon on the desktop, with no bothersome text beneath it. If you use this tip to rename a folder, you will not be able to rename the folder back using the right-click rename. I’m not sure why this is. What you’ll have to do is open a command prompt and change directory into the containing folder (For instance, the desktop folder), and run this command: ren “Alt+255” “NewFolderName” You will need to actually type the Alt+255 characters where illustrated in the command. It will appear as a space. Note that the Recyle Bin icon won’t work this way.

3. Enable Hidden BootScreen in Windows Vista

The Windows Vista BootScreen is pointless, but Microsoft decided to hide a more visually appealing boot screen that can easily be enabled with very little trouble. I’m not sure why they didn’t make the boot screen better.

1) Press Win+R, type msconfig and press Enter.

2) If User Account Control prompts you to allow the action, click on Continue.

3) In the “System Configuration” window, click on the Boot tab.

4) Select your Windows Vista installation and under “Boot options”, check “No GUI boot”. Press OK.

5) In the dialog that appears, check “Don’t show this message again”, and then click on Restart.

6) Your computer will now reboot, and you will see the Aurora boot screen with text that says “Starting Windows Vista”.

Note: You may get a Windows Defender error on the next startup. You can enable the system config utility using the tray icon and this error will go away.

4. Fix for COM Surrogate Has Stopped Working Error in Vista

If you’ve been getting the error COM Surrogate has stopped working whenever you browse folders containing Divx avi files, it looks like the latest Divx update to codec version 6.5 fixes the issue, but it also seems to remove the thumbnails.

Start-up begins with the BIOS loading the Master Boot Record (MBR) on the bootable disk. The MBR in turn loads the Partition Boot Record (PBR) on the active partition. Windows Vista is different from XP starting by the fact the PBR code written by Windows Vista no longer looks for Ntldr. The new boot loader in Windows Vista is Bootmgr. This component loads the Boot Configuration Database (BCD), which in turn loads an OS loader boot application (Winload.exe, in the case of Windows Vista). Finally, the OS loader application is responsible for initializing the kernel. This process is illustrated below.

You can think of this change in two elements:

The two key actions performed by Ntldr in previous Windows versions have been divided between two components:

1. Bootmgr reads the boot configuration, including device and path locations.

2. WindowsSystem32Winload.exe initializes the kernel.

The boot configuration stored by Boot.ini in previous Windows versions is now stored in an extensible database, BootBCD, the Boot Configuration Database (BCD).

Recovery Partition Not Working - Vista - System Restore to Factory Settings - F11

In modern computers, manufactures create a partition on the hard drive which contains the installation files to restore the computer to the way you bought it. This partition is usually the D drive and possibly also named recovery or something along the lines of that.

A few months ago my younger brother got his hands on my laptop and caused it to have shut down and start up times excessive of 3 hours and nothing i would do would fix it. The windows vista system restore was pointless and waist full and did nothing to help.

I ended up resorting to use the restore to factory settings by pressing F11 on start up. However this did nothing and caused the computer to continue its 3 hour loading time. F11 usually accesses the recovery drive data to execute a system restore. WARNING WARNING!!! Throughout the life of you computer do not change the drive letter of your recovery partition. This usually causes this error.

To access the recovery partition now i was required to go to 'Computer Management' in Vista. Search for 'computer' in the start menu and it should pop up as an option to choose. If the UAC is enables you will have to allow access for it to load. Now that you have 'Computer Management' open there should be 3 side menu options: 'System Tools', 'Storage' and 'Services and Applications'.

Click on 'Storage' then 'Disk Management'

Up the top there should be a list of drives which are installed on the computer, for mine there are 2, the main drive (c) and the recovery drive (d). Others such as dvds when they are in and flash drives when in ready boost also are shown.

Below this list it should show installed hardware which can store data and which partitions are on them. Disk0 has both drive C and D.

To access the recovery drive you need to right click on it and then click "Make Partition as Active". This Makes this drive the drive that Windows Vista looks at when it loads the data on start up. Now all you need to do is restart the computer and it should load the recovery partition and you will be able to restore to factory settings.

For many of us, the most important thing that will draw us back from buying Vista in the next few years is the fact that our XP-based computers will not run Vista at the best performances, and it is expansive to upgrade your system. Just think, you need 4-8 times more RAM memory, 10 times more available space on your hard disk and almost 3 times more CPU power compared with Windows XP. Moreover, some computers won’t allow these upgrades. Those ones, and the ones that run previous versions like 98, ME have to be replaced with a new system. Also, Windows Vista license is still very expansive for most of us. If you want more features, you need to pay more.

If you've been thinking about upgrading to Microsoft's new Windows Vista OS, you might want to hold off for a few months, until all of the bugs have been worked out.

Known problems include:

Special columns don't show. The Windows explorer in Vista has changed dramatically, and one of those changes was to abandon the additional columns and introduce a new "property system". Since the property system is file type based, I'm hearing there are problems adding a column for Subversion information.

Also, exporting from a working copy only copies some empty folders. This bug is due to a change in the SHFileOperation API. Since the API doesn't work the same way anymore on Vista as it did on Win2k or XP, you may have to come up with another way to export.

Recently, an Apple Computer commercial for the Mac featured a down and out "Windows guy" who sheepishly confessed that he was taking the unlikely step of uninstalling his recent Windows Vista upgrade and returning to the former Windows XP system. While a clever scenario for an advertisement, it seems it was not at all far from the truth. In the course of extensive tests, some independent computer researchers found that XP did much better than Vista in all of the tests they conducted.

Interestingly, these surprising results that came from comparing the performance of XP against the "latest and greatest" Windows Vista were consistent regardless of which versions of the operating systems were used or the amount of RAM memory that was installed on the pc. The tests clearly showed that even when the Vista installation was upgraded to the most recent "Service Pack Beta One" package, Vista still consistently proved to be sluggish.

In order to run comprehensive tests, the researchers installed both patched and unpatched versions of the two systems, namely Windows XP and Vista. They were run on a Dell laptop with a dual-core processor and they used the Microsoft Office application with each version of these operating systems.

The test results showed the time it took for each of the system configurations to complete a number of given tasks in Office. These tasks included creating a complex document and creating a series of presentation slides. The times to complete these tasks under XP and under Vista were then carefully noted and compared against each other.

The results were not at all what the researchers were expecting to report. Not only were all of the tested functions faster with the XP operating system installed, but the testers were surprised to find that XP proved to be approximately twice as fast as the operations performed in Vista, in almost all of the tests.

This is a significant difference in speed and undoubtedly is a difference that will be noticeable to even casual pc users. For power users, such a drastic reduction in speed is not only frustrating but simply unacceptable. Because of this, many people who had "upgraded" to Vista have subsequently gone back and reinstalled XP on their machines.

It is no wonder that the folks at Apple grabbed the opportunity to poke fun at the latest "upgrade" offered to Microsoft Windows
users.

On top of the bad news that came out of those speed comparisons of XP versus Vista, the other testing delivered some additional blows. The experiments with the two operating systems also clearly showed that Vista demonstrated a tendency to be "resource-hungry" and gobbled up virtually all of the extra RAM memory that might be added to a computer. When testers doubled the memory in the test machine from one gigabyte to two gigabytes, the result was a measly 4% improvement in performance.

Even if there were not performance issues with Vista, at the moment there have not been any important new programs that have been produced to run only on Vista. But, with these two factors combined, people are not feeling compelled to spend the money and go through the hassle of leaving Windows XP to switch.

PLEASE NOTE: This Vista install CD can be run from within Vista. Just insert the CD once Vista has loaded up and go to install, go > Install Now > Upgrade.

3. After a few minutes you will get a language option. Select your language and hit next.

4. On the install screen select "Repair your computer"

5. Windows will find your copy of Vista on the machine

* System Restore - This will Restore Windows to an earlier point in time
